About Receding Hairlines
A receding hairline is often a complication of androgenic alopecia, which is a condition characterized by the gradual loss of hair over time. It is also commonly referred to as male or female pattern baldness. Hair loss can also be caused by genetic factors, hormonal changes, and more. In men, hair loss is often caused by a decrease in the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
DHT directly affects the health and retention of hair follicles. When levels of DHT are decreased, hair follicles become thinner and shorter, eventually separating from the scalp entirely. A receding hairline is most commonly seen in men, but many women suffer from this issue, too. The “pattern” nomenclature in “pattern baldness” refers to the visible order in which patients lose their hair. In men, the forehead and scalp are almost always the first to thin, which creates a receded hairline. (1) Women suffering from hair loss are more likely to start losing hair from the top of the scalp first.

Candidates for Receding Hairline Treatment
While receding hairlines are more common in men, many women can also experience this condition. As such, almost any patient who is distressed by a receding hairline can receive treatment for this issue at our office. For optimal results, it is recommended that patients be in good overall health, do not smoke or are willing to quit smoking, and have the patience and willingness to collaborate with our professionals to find the right treatment for their hair loss.
Personal Consultation
An initial consultation with one of the California Hair MD providers is one of the first steps in treating your receding hairline. At this appointment, you will discuss the history of your hair loss, including when it started, your parents’ and relatives’ experience with hair loss, lifestyle and diet changes that may have affected your hair loss, and more.
As hair loss can be influenced by a myriad of factors, our professionals will need information about your medical history to design the most effective treatment plan. This includes any medications, supplements, or existing conditions that could alter the results of your treatment or exacerbate future hair loss. We are also considerate about your aesthetic goals during the hair loss treatment planning stage.
Preparation
You will receive specific instructions on how to prepare for your receding hairline treatment. Depending on your treatment plan, you can expect to:
- Alter your medication regimen as instructed
- Arrange transportation to and from your procedure (if necessary)
- Fill any prescriptions given to you by your provider
- Quit smoking for a period of time (if applicable)
Treatments for Receding Hairline
Some of the effective treatments we offer at California Hair MD for a receding hairline include:
Hair Transplants
Hair transplants are an effective treatment for repopulating areas of the scalp with growing hair. Using FUE (follicular unit extraction) we can take hair from either the back of your head or another area of the body with ample donor hair for reimplantation. The hair on the back part of the head is more resistant to hair loss as it is less susceptible to the effects of fluctuations in DHT. (2)
At California Hair MD, we can perform hair transplants with the new ARTAS® robotic transplant system. Using cutting-edge technology, ARTAS is able to select the healthiest and most viable hair follicles to extract for transplantation. Once removed, these follicles can be placed into the hairline with extreme precision. ARTAS incorporates FUE to bypass the more significant scarring that traditional hair transplantation can cause.
We are proud to be one of the few practices in the country that offers FUE with the NeoGraft® device. NeoGraft is an innovative medical instrument that completely automates the FUE process, and patients are left with natural-looking results and an easy recovery.
Medications
Many patients can see impressive hair growth results with medication regimens. The two main medications that have proven their success with hair growth are minoxidil and finasteride. (3) Minoxidil is available over the counter, but our providers can prescribe stronger doses if necessary. Patients apply a topical minoxidil solution daily to their scalp. Minoxidil works to dilate blood vessels by blocking potassium channels in the scalp. In doing so, oxygen and other nutrients are better able to reach the hair follicle cells, which enhances hair growth. (3)
Finasteride, on the other hand, is not an anti-androgen compound. Finasteride is taken orally daily and works by inhibiting the uptake of 5 alpha-reductase type 2 hormones. (3)
Low-Level Light Therapy
Low-level light therapy (often shortened to LLLT) has gained popularity as one of the most effective non-surgical hair restoration treatments. This procedure relies on an effect called photobiomodulation. When exposed to certain light wavelengths, activity in cells is increased. With enough activity, cells are prompted to enter their growth phases. When used on the scalp, this technology can stimulate hair growth in specific areas.
Platelet-Rich Plasma
Platelet-rich plasma treatments, or PRP, use blood plasma containing high amounts of platelets to influence hair growth. Hair and skin cells are particularly responsive to nutrients and platelet-derived growth factors, and when an influx of platelets is introduced, cells are stimulated into new growth phases and produce new hair.
