Follicular Unit Extraction, or FUE, is the gold standard for hair restoration. NeoGraft is an adaptation of traditional FUE hair transplantation, using an automated process to harvest hair follicles in “units,” small groups of 1-4 individual hairs. A specialized device creates small incisions around each follicular unit, then uses suction to gently remove them from the scalp. After the hair follicles are extracted, the NeoGraft device stores them until transplantation.
The NeoGraft system is “no touch.” Each extracted hair follicle is stored in optimal conditions without potential contamination or damage from surgical tools. NeoGraft uses reverse pneumatic pressure to implant each extracted follicle at the ideal depth and positioning. Optimal preservation techniques mean that more hair follicles survive the harvesting process, resulting in a fuller head of hair and better aesthetic results.
NeoGraft offers key improvements when compared to the manual FUE hair restoration process. Some benefits of the procedure include:
- Minimal damage to the hair follicles
- More success with graft implantation resulting in increased hair volume and fullness
- Less nerve and blood vessel damage
- Faster recovery with fewer activity restrictions
- More precision in graft placement for a more natural-looking result
- Minimal pain and discomfort
- No need for general anesthesia or IV sedation
NeoGraft versus FUE versus FUT
Before NeoGraft, the strip method (also called FUT) was one of the most popular methods for hair transplantation. This method involved removing a strip of hair-bearing skin from the back of the scalp and dividing it into individual hair grafts. This method of hair transplantation was very invasive and left patients with a long scar across the back of the scalp.
The alternative to FUT was an intensive procedure called FUE where small individual hair grafts were manually removed from the scalp. Traditional FUE is a painstaking and delicate process where individual hair follicles are removed one by one. The process is slow, labor-intensive, and very expensive.
NeoGraft is FUE, but better! NeoGraft offers many benefits over manual FUE. It’s an automated method that uses a specialized device to harvest and implant hairs. With NeoGraft, many of the downsides of FUE are eliminated.
If you’re ready to learn more about hair restoration in Southern California, contact California Hair MD. Ours is one of the only practices in the U.S. co-run by a board-certified dermatologist and a triple-board-certified plastic surgeon. Our unique combination of medical specialties allows us to provide patients with access to the latest medical and surgical options for hair restoration.
Alopecia (hair loss) is highly individualized and is most commonly a result of genetics or stress. Androgenetic alopecia, the most common form of hair loss in men and women, is commonly addressed with NeoGraft and provides excellent results.
Ideal candidates for NeoGraft are men and women who experience some degree of hair loss but have a sufficient amount of hair in a donor site. Common transplant locations include the hairline, crown, beard, and eyebrows. Those who suffer from hair loss due to medication may not be good candidates.
What About Hair Loss in Women?
Female pattern baldness is different from male pattern baldness, so it is important to choose a provider that has experience using NeoGraft on female patients. Women tend to lose hair in the center of the scalp while men experience a receding hairline. Our providers work with women regularly and know how to address female hair loss effectively.
During your NeoGraft consultation at one of our Southern California locations, you will meet with either Dr. Richard Chaffoo or Dr. Susan Stuart, both NeoGraft experts. The doctor will listen to your concerns and take details of your health history. They will then perform an examination of your scalp and determine if NeoGraft is the right solution for you. Make sure to ask our team to see before and after photos of patients with similar hair loss patterns. Seeing photos of real patients can give you a better idea of the type of results possible with FUE hair restoration.
When you come to see us for a NeoGraft consultation, you can also explore our other treatment options to find your best fit. To achieve the best possible results, you need an individualized treatment solution. One will be created with the particulars of your case during your consultation.

Unlike some hair transplantation methods, NeoGraft does not require shaving the head. The hair in the donor area will need to be cut short before the procedure, but other areas of hair can remain uncut. We ask hair transplant patients to stop smoking and avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications in the days before their procedure. You may also be asked to wash your hair on the day of treatment with a special shampoo.
The NeoGraft procedure begins with the doctor cutting, not shaving, the hair in the donor site. We will then apply a local anesthetic to the scalp to numb it. Hair follicles are then extracted using a specialized handpiece via pneumatic pressure. The safely stored healthy follicles are then implanted using reverse pneumatic pressure in locations and depths that will provide the most natural-looking results. This process should not be rushed. Therefore, it can take between four and eight hours to ensure that follicular units are implanted.
NeoGraft is minimally-invasive, allowing patients to return to work and other activities quickly. Many of our hair transplantation patients are back at work within a few days of their procedure. Some bleeding, discomfort and crusting is a normal part of the hair transplantation process, but will resolve quickly. In a matter of weeks to months, the hair from the follicular units will fall out, stimulating new hair growth.
Most of our patients are delighted with their NeoGraft results. After recovery is complete, hair will grow normally and can be worn long or short in any hairstyle. It usually takes about three months to begin to see fuller hair. Depending on the core cause of the hair loss, results can be permanent.
Corresponding & Complementary Procedures
In addition to NeoGraft, California Hair MD also offers SmartGraft and ARTAS®. SmartGraft is another state-of-the-art automated FUE hair transplantation device. In cases of larger transplantation sections, SmartGraft may be the better solution in terms of procedure length. NeoGraft may be the better choice for smaller transplant areas.
ARTAS utilizes a robotic hair transplantation arm guided visually by the doctor, versus a motorized handheld tool like NeoGraft and SmartGraft. ARTAS also uses digital imaging and a computer-based algorithm to pick the healthiest, most suitable grafts. However, ARTAS has some limitations with regard to graft site choice. Additionally, ARTAS is not ideal for curly or very fair hair.
In order to see which FUE hair transplantation technique will be best for you, contact California Hair MD and schedule a consultation.
