What Are Robotic Hair Transplants?
The ARTAS system for hair restoration uses robotic technology to carefully select the healthiest hair follicles for hair transplantation. The system chooses and removes individual follicles without damaging the surrounding hair. The precision of a robotic system allows for smaller incisions, reduced trauma to the scalp and hair follicles, and higher quality grafts.
Robotic hair transplantation is the most advanced method for hair restoration, and in our opinion, the ARTAS system is the best available option for robotic hair transplants. ARTAS improves follicular unit extraction (FUE) techniques to create long-lasting and natural-looking results with less downtime and scarring.
How Does Robotic Hair Restoration Work?
Hair loss is very common. It is estimated that 65% of American men will notice some degree of hair thinning by the age of 35. By the age of 50, nearly 85% of men will experience significant hair loss. Hair loss has many causes, from genetics to health and environmental causes, but the majority of male hair loss is caused by Androgenic Alopecia, or male pattern baldness.
Male hair follicles are sensitive to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). As men age, this hormone increases and causes sensitized hairs to become thinner. Eventually, these hairs fall out and do not regrow.
Not all hairs on the head are sensitive to DHT; hairs at the sides and the back of the head are usually resistant to the effects of DHT. This resistance is the reason for the characteristic balding pattern that men typically experience. Robotic hair transplantation moves hair from the sides and back of the head to restore a natural-looking hairline. By removing only a small portion of the hair on the sides and back of the head, men can retain the appearance of a fuller head of hair.
The ARTAS robotic system for hair transplantation uses precision robotics and digital imaging to carefully select the healthiest hair follicles for transplantation. This system is highly accurate and ensures that hair at the donor site will remain thick by leaving the remaining hair follicles untouched.
ARTAS i-X-i
Artas i-X-i is the only robotic surgical device in the world specifically designed for hair restoration. California Hair MD was the first practice to introduce this device to patients in Orange and San Diego counties. And, we are the only practice with this technology in the region. The device utilizes several stereoscopic cameras that scan the scalp to find the most ideal hair follicles to harvest using artificial intelligence (AI). The robot harvest follicles in a precise, reproducible, and consistent manner much more accurately and faster than other manual or semi-automatic devices. We are also one of the research and testing centers for the Artas robotic system aiding the company’s engineers in continually perfecting the device.
In addition, the Artas i-X-i is able to create recipient sites and implant follicles within much of the frontal area. It is able to visualize surrounding normal hair follicles to reduce any damage to them during the transplantation process. We continue to work with the research engineers to develop further applications of the Artas i-X-i for implantation into the more complex crown region.

How Can I Prepare for ARTAS Hair Restoration?
If you’re interested in hair transplantation with ARTAS, the first step is to learn more about the procedure at a complimentary complimentary consultation. Reach out to California Hair MD to explore your options and determine if you’re a good candidate.
Once your procedure is scheduled, you can prepare for hair transplantation by transitioning your hair to a short style. The advanced robotic system we use for this procedure requires donor hair is no longer than 1 mm in length. Patients typically find they are more comfortable with their new, short hair if the transition happens gradually. We recommend that patients undergo a series of preparatory haircuts leading up to their procedure. Slowly transitioning to a shorter style makes the change less noticeable to friends and family as you prepare for your hair transplantation. After the procedure, hair will grow normally, and you can return to your favorite style with a thicker and fuller hairline.
