About Hair Transplants

At California Hair MD, we employ FUE techniques as opposed to strip harvesting methods because FUE allows for less visible scarring and results that look natural. The scarring for FUE is more subtle thanks to the unit-by-unit extraction method, meaning it targets individual hair groups rather than removing a whole strip of hair at once. This method also gives Dr. Chaffoo the option to take hairs from donor areas other than the back of the head, such as the arms, legs, and chest. ⁽¹⁾ Because these hairs are not prone to falling out in their original positions, they offer a permanent solution in the areas where hair has been newly transplanted. ⁽¹⁾ There are two main FUE techniques we utilize at California Hair MD: NeoGraft and ARTAS. Both types provide certain advantages over traditional methods.

NeoGraft

NeoGraft is an updated, semi-automated method of FUE. When done in the traditional way, manual FUE is certainly effective, but it is also considered to be a more tedious procedure. Preparation

Procedure

After our team makes guiding markings on the scalp and donor sites, shaves the targeted areas, and administers the appropriate anesthesia, it will be time for Dr. Chaffoo to begin the hair transplant procedure. ⁽¹⁾ While both FUE techniques have the same goals, the procedures for both techniques will look slightly different. However, they will both follow a basic procedure of extracting the hair from the donor sites and transplanting these follicular units into the desired areas, though they will go about it in different ways. Because hair grows in small groups, these methods can extract up to 5 hairs at once. ⁽²⁾ A hair transplant is a minimally invasive procedure that can take anywhere from 3-8 hours. The length of your procedure will depend on how much hair we transfer to your scalp and how many different donor sites we use. ⁽²⁾

Recovery

Thanks to the scalp’s prevalent blood supply, the healing period should be quick and simple. ⁽¹⁾ However, there are some things that we will recommend you do in order to make the most out of your recovery period. To encourage an even quicker healing process and less scabbing, you should keep the treated areas moist. We may provide you with a saline bottle and cream for this purpose. ⁽¹⁾ After a few days, we will recommend that you use gentle shampoo to wash your hair. However, you still need to be careful and be very gentle with your head and hair. ⁽¹⁾ Recovery time for a hair transplant can be a few days or a couple weeks–it depends on the patient’s unique situation.
