About PRP for Hair Loss
Platelet-rich plasma is created by taking a sample of a patient’s blood, separating the platelets, and reinjecting them into a smaller volume of plasma. Platelets are integral to many of the body’s healing processes. As such, PRP injections have become a popular method for treating a variety of health issues. PRP contains a variety of growth factors and cytokines that are associated with wound healing and tissue restoration. (1)
As with most PRP injection procedures, PRP procedures for hair loss start by creating a platelet-rich plasma serum using a patient’s own blood. This serum is then injected into the area where a patient wishes to reinvigorate the growth of hair.
While PRP injections do not guarantee results for every individual, studies have shown that PRP injections can lead to a significant increase in average hair count after three months for some patients. (2) PRP is considered to be a less-invasive approach to hair restoration when compared to the more extensive method of hair transplantation.
Benefits
The benefits of PRP procedures for hair restoration are numerous. Some of the benefits of PRP injections for hair restoration are:
- Quick, minimally invasive procedure
- Natural treatment using the patient’s own plasma
- Long-lasting hair restoration results
- Minimal recovery time
- Reduced risks
In addition to the benefits of the procedure itself, patients who see positive results from PRP injections often experience a boost in confidence with their fuller heads of hair.
Candidates
PRP therapy is suitable for a wide range of individuals, but it is most effective for those who are experiencing hair loss. Candidates are expected to be in good health and not have any conditions that could potentially pose a threat to the safety of this procedure.
Your eligibility for this procedure is ultimately at the discretion of Dr. Chaffoo and his staff, although most individuals who are seeking hair restoration will likely qualify for PRP injections as it is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure.

Preparation
Because of the minimally invasive, non-surgical nature of PRP injections, the preparation process is minimal. Dr. Chaffoo and his staff will walk you through the preparation process and create a list of any necessary steps you might need to take before the procedure. Patients will be asked to give a blood sample to create the platelet-rich plasma required for this procedure. If applicable, patients should refrain from the usage of tobacco and nicotine as far in advance of the procedure as possible. You will be asked to discontinue the usage of blood thinners or adjust certain medications that could interfere with the treatment.
Procedure
The treatment starts with your California Hair MD professional drawing a small amount of your blood, which will then be processed to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of the sample. The resulting PRP serum is then injected into the scalp at the areas where hair thinning or loss has occurred, or where the patient hopes to see increased hair growth.
Overall, the procedure is quick, usually only lasting around an hour. Topical anesthesia is applied to the treatment area. Because this treatment is less invasive than surgical procedures, patients will not have to worry about undergoing general anesthesia. This procedure can take place at any one of our five locations for your convenience:
Recovery
Because PRP injections are a minimally invasive, nonsurgical procedure, the recovery process tends to be rather straightforward. Some patients may experience mild swelling or irritation at the injection site, but these effects usually subside within a few days. Otherwise, the majority of patients can expect to return to normal function almost immediately after the procedure. If you have any questions during the recovery process, you are more than welcome to contact Dr. Chaffoo’s office.
Results
Because each procedure is tailored to each patient, results can vary. In many cases, patients begin to notice significant improvements in their hair growth within 3 months of treatment. (2) To achieve the best results possible, Dr. Chaffoo might recommend a series of PRP sessions, typically spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. It is important to note that hair restoration can be a gradual process. Patients should have realistic expectations about what to expect with their procedure.
Cost of PRP for Hair Restoration in Southern California
The cost of PRP for hair restoration is unique to each patient and will depend on a variety of factors, including whether or not any additional treatment methods are incorporated into the appointment.
Because hair restoration is a relatively gradual process, patients will likely have to wait several weeks to observe their results to determine whether or not they could benefit from follow-up injections. A rough estimate of the total cost of your PRP treatment can be given during your consultation.

FAQ
How long does each PRP session take?
Each PRP session usually takes about 60-90 minutes from start to finish, including preparation, blood draw, and injections. Treatment times can vary.
How many treatment sessions for PRP injections will I need?
Most patients benefit from 3-4 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart, followed by maintenance treatments every 6-12 months. The number of treatment sessions you receive will be determined by your goals and the progression of your hair loss. Your provider will be able to recommend an injection schedule that is tailored to your situation during your consultation.
Is the PRP injection procedure painful?
Local anesthesia is used to numb the scalp during the injections. Most patients experience very minimal discomfort during the PRP injection process.
Are there any risks involved with PRP therapy?
As PRP is derived from your own blood, serious adverse reactions are rare, making it a safer option than other more invasive procedures. However, mild swelling, bruising, or tenderness at the injection sites can occur. These symptoms often subside on their own.
Can PRP be used alongside other hair restoration techniques?
Yes, PRP can complement other treatments such as topical solutions or hair transplant surgery, enhancing overall results. If you are interested in other kinds of hair restoration, consult with a professional at California Hair MD to learn about the other services available to you.
